Traffic Management as a Service: a smart digital traffic control centre for every small and medium-sized city? 


Traffic Management Centres are mostly working independently and very hardware-oriented: sensors, CCTV camera’s and large rooms filled with screens and people watching them 24/7. There are some disadvantages to this approach: 

  • Expensive: hardware & staffing. Large investments and takes years to set up.
  • Fixed location, not flexible
  • Car-centric, although governments want to stimulate a shift to sustainable transport
  • No individual info to citizens, only general communication to the public: radio-news, digital signs, twitter
  • Alienation from modern tech industry: huge technology gap, not ready for Mobility As A Service, self-driving cars, ..

How does it work?

TMaaS is a central cloud-platform that integrates with local and global information sources. Local authorities can access the platform and manage traffic instantly, instead of investing years in hardware.

Traffic Management as a Service:  

  • Gets data where they are.
  • Collaborates with parties that own real-time data about mobility
  • Goes beyond car-related data. 
  • Is configured according to city needs & local mobility policies
  • Lets the platform monitor the data instead of people watching screens. Take automatic action if things happen that deviate from the expectations. Matches data from different sources and links causes & effect
  • Lets citizens enter their needs & preferences
  • Informs citizens automatically and individually, based on citizen's preferences or actual location. Preferably through social media or messaging applications
  • Can receive responses from citizens to fine-tune the information

Current urban mobility centres are notoriously expensive, and focus on installing costly hardware in order to monitor traffic. Moreover, those systems are unable to provide personalised information to the city’s residents. The Traffic Management as a Service-system on the other hand uses data that are readily available from various partners and companies, and works multimodal. In other words: it takes all manner of transportation modes into account.

Advantages of Traffic as a Management System for the City of Ghent and the residents who subscribe are myriad: citizens can gain immediate access to information about their means of transport or their trajectories of choice.

City of Ghent employees will be able to monitor all mobility data, and use these to adjust traffic lights, inform residents, evaluate and prepare mobility measures when needed.
